Background

Dr. David Grand, a therapist, discovered that “where you look affects how you feel,” and brainspotting was born. While working with a competitive ice skater who was struggling with performance anxiety, Dr. Grand noticed that while she focused on the bodily symptoms of her anxiety, her eyes wobbled at a specific point in her gaze. After asking her to hold her stare at a specific spot, information flowed out of the athlete, including: new memories, as well as old memories that she thought she had already processed. The girl processed this information again, and resolved issues on a deeper level than before. After the ice skater held this eye position for about ten minutes, she audibly noted that her emotions were more calm and that she felt less triggered. The following day, the athlete conquered her performance anxiety and was able to land a tricky jump that had been eluding her.

What is brainspotting?

Let’s start with explaining what a brain spot is. A brain spot is a point in your sight that connects with an emotionally charged, or traumatic event in the brain. When focusing on a specific event, the eyes may wobble, freeze, blink, or the pupils may even dilate or constrict. By holding that point in sight, the brain spot is stimulated and healing can begin. The brain and body work hand in hand; what is stored in the brain is also stored in the body, and vice versa. Blending the brain and body into a cohesive unit can encourage healing on a cellular level.

How does it work?

To begin, a client thinks about a particular stressor, block, or issue that they feel triggers them. When thinking about this conflict, they reflect on where they feel the trigger activation in their body. Then, using a pointer, the therapist will guide the client to different focus points, noticing when the client feels the most activated. Once here, the client will hold their gaze to initiate processing. Listening to specific sounds and frequencies while continuing to visually focus on a specific point may stimulate both hemispheres in the brain allowing processing on even deeper, subcortical levels.

People process in different ways, and more importantly, there is no wrong way to process and heal! Some people are physical processors, meaning they may experience more twitching and movement in their body, others may be more cognitive and can see different images or hear prior statements as they process. Some report it feels like a dream they can’t remember, and the harder they try to make sense of it, the more it dissipates. Your brain knows what it needs to heal, and will do exactly what it deems necessary. We have to trust the process.

What are the results?

Studies have shown that people can feel a decrease in their activation state in just one brainspotting session. These feelings may be something physical that feels lighter in the body, or it may be emotional, and felt in your heart, or in your head. Though it has been reported to feel a healing change after one session, brainspotting is not a “one and done” sort of treatment. On average, it takes several sessions to fully work through an issue. If the healing can be felt after one session, think about the healing change you will feel after fully working through your blocks.
