Counseling in Katy, TX: Reframing Negative to Positive

It’s crazy how fast life goes once Halloween hits. First it’s the end of the summer, the beginning bits of chilly air blow in, and everyone is ready for fall. Then, Halloween is here, and the race to the new year is on! It doesn’t matter how many years I’ve been on this planet, but it always seems like the holidays sneak up on me. Holidays and families can be extremely stressful. Reaching out for counseling in Katy, TX is a great way to unpack and manage the stress that comes with the holidays in a healthy way. When the negative stress about the upcoming weeks is building, we can try to reframe some of those negative thoughts into positive ones.

One of my favorite techniques to highlight strengths and find positives about the situation is the GLAD technique. GLAD is an acronym used to reframe your mindset when you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Keep in mind that depending on the day, this technique will look a bit different. Circumstances dictate where your mental state might be when working through this exercise.

G is for Grateful

Take a deep breath. Identify one thing you are grateful for. It doesn’t need to be something huge. It just needs to be something to take your focus off the negative. You might be grateful to have woken up this morning, or you could be grateful that it’s raining after a week of hot, dry weather. You get to decide what you are grateful for.

L is for Learning

What have you learned today? Calculus? No? Yeah, me either. But would you like to know what I did learn? Sprinkling tajin on pineapple is delicious! My point is that you don’t have to have learned something major for this step to be successful. Maybe you learned a new fun fact from the internet. We all learn something every day.

A is for Accomplished

What have you accomplished today? On rough days, maybe getting out of bed is your accomplishment. On great days, maybe you clocked a full day at work and still have energy! That’s a huge accomplishment! It can be large, or small, you can decide. This exercise is for you. Deciding to work through this exercise can be your accomplishment!!

D is for Delighted

Good things come to those who wait, and that’s why we save the best for last. What is something that has delighted you today? Was the sunshine warm on your face? Do you like the way your shampoo smells? Maybe you heard a silly new joke? You can pick anything, or everything! It’s important to take time to focus on the good! Keep breathing, and enjoy being mindful about the positive parts of your day.

Working through this exercise regularly, or even daily, is beneficial to keeping a healthy state of mind. Some days will be more difficult than others, but that is not a reason, or an invitation to give up. Difficult days are the days that force the most growth from us, so on those days, it’s critical to look for the shiny bits and not the tarnish. Counseling in Katy, TX is here to help you work through the hard days, and the good days. Reach out to begin the journey to a healthier, happier you. Let’s work together, today!
